We offer highly accurate characterisation of the constituents and crystallographic phases in kidney stone calculi.
Analysis is performed using X-Ray Powder Diffraction(XRPD) in a GMP-certified laboratory specifically dedicated to these kinds of measurements. Our facilities are based in the eastern part of the Netherlands.
Compared to other methods used for identification of calculi like infrared or UV/VIS spectroscopy, the XRPD method is more precise and selective in identifying all crystalline phases in a sample. For this reason it is also called the "gold standard" of kidney stone analysis. Why Is Analysis of Kidney Stones Important?
Around 10% of the western population at some point in their life suffers from kidney stones(urolithiasis).
These so-called calculi accumulate inside the kidneys and cause a variety of symptoms, including bleeding and severe pains.
Due to the fact that there are many causes for kidney stones, the kidney stones themselves vary greatly in composition and structure. Therefore deriving the composition of a kidney stone can give important insights into the cause of the stone formation and can help health-professionals choose the optimal treatment strategy. Be it a metabolic dysfunction, drug (metabolite) accumulation or infection, characterisation of the stone constituents and morphology can give an explanation for the pathology.
Kidney stones differ in their morphology and chemical composition (figure below) and often form aggregates containing more than one type of crystal. While the morphology of the kidney stone can be identified using optical examination, deriving the chemical composition requires the use of dedicated analytical methods.
The analysis is destructive which means we will have to crush the stone to powder in order to obtain accurate data. We may produce photos of the kidney stone upon request. To ship the stone it should be cleaned and dried and put in a closed container(e.g. ziplock bag, plastic box). Preferably this container should be mailed in a bubble-padded envelope.
The stone sample will be labeled and stored in our archive and the results will be sent to you digitally in the form of a certificate of analysis (COA).
